FAQS

FAQS

  • What are the academic requirements for participation?

Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. (PWLS) is the only national youth sports organization in America that requires its participants to perform adequately in the classroom before permitting them to play. We believe that the standards we have set give these children a sense of responsibility and an appreciation for academics and athletics that will help them develop later on in life.

Proof of satisfactory progress in school is required. A 2.0/70% or the equivalent shall be the minimum grade point average acceptable to participate. Those who do not meet this requirement, or home-schooled students can still play ifthey follow the alternative eligibility process which is monitored by progress reports.

  • How much does it cost to play?

Registrations costs vary from program to program.  Our registration fees for each participant usually ranges from $225 to $250, in addition to ONE fundraiser during the season.  Any additional fundraisers are independent to each team for need based travel (For example, regional playoffs or National Championship play).

  • What are the Divisions of Play?

For football teams, leagues have options with how to structure their program. While leagues can continue the current structure where a player is placed in a division based on his or her age and weight, they may also instead choose to register players based on age only.  The Cheer/Dance program is broken into age divisions ranging from Flag Cat/Cub (ages 5-7) up to Varsity (ages 12-16). Cheerleading teams are also broken down into Large (21-35). Medium (11-20) and Small (10 or fewer). Teams compete in YCADA competition divisions (PW1, PW2, PW3, PW4 and Sideline Performance Cheer).  Please review the age and age/weight matrix for guidelines on the FORMS page.

  • Are Tryouts Allowed in Pop Warner?

NO TRYOUTS! – Pop Warner programs are not permitted to hold tryouts or cutting of rosters.

  • Is Participation in Pop Warner Safe?

Pop Warner has a long history of providing a safe environment for all of our members. Kids compete with kids of similar age and size. Pop Warner is the ONLY youth football program (local, regional and national) that sets and enforces a strict Age & Weight Matrix that reduces the risk and reality of injuries. Datalys Institute’s research data show that Pop Warner Rules and Heads-Up Football Training result in injury rate that has 87% fewer injuries than non-Heads-Up/non Pop Warner programs.

  • With COVID-19 and all other major sports being cancelled, when will Pop Warner make a decision on the 2020 Pop Warner Football Season?

Yes. Refunds will be issued if the season is cancelled in it's entirety prior to August 1.  We're a nonprofit and all proceeds earned/donated are allocated and distributed for the growth of our program and community relations.  Pop Warner National is expected to make their much anticipated decision by Mid June.
